Practical application of new food labelling regu­lations by Hungarian food businesses

1. Summary

By examining the process of adopting new labelling re­quirements of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 into prac­tice it can be stated that adaptation to new labelling re­quirements does not happen in a uniform way all over the market of food industry products, there are differences by product category, by labelling requirement, and also by the characteristics of food businesses responsible for food labelling. Data of this research can provide impor­tant help in identifying and specifying those tools that can help food businesses to better understand new labelling requirements and implement them more effectively.

2. Introduction

Information on the packaging of food products is an im­portant tool in the food market, ensuring a high level of consumer protection and consumers’ right to information, and also the realization of a high level of health protection. Food entrepreneurs have to ensure that consumers are provided with adequate information about foods, in order to be able to choose the products to be consumed based on this information, and to prevent the application of prac­tices that mislead consumers [1].


To achieve the above goals, legislators have been working actively, resulting, from time to time, in new or altered food labelling regulations coming into effect. In our research, we were interested to know how fast adaptation to the new environment or application of the new regulations in practice was in the case of domestic food producers and distributors, and whether the dynamic of this process was influenced by such characteristics of food businesses as the nature of the product manufactured, geographical lo­cation of the given business etc.
