Organic migrants of food contact materials and analytical possibilities of the compounds leached

1. Summary

 

There are four thousand materials in the world regularly coming into contact with foods [1], most of them some kind of packaging materials. Compounds leaching from these materials and entering our foods can have a detrimental effect on the health of the person consuming the food, so it is very important to have food contact materials tested in suitable laboratories.

 

It was a goal of our laboratory to adapt analytical methods suitable for the inspection of food packaging materials, and to develop new analytical methods. We have been active in the three specific areas covered by relevant European Union regulations: organoleptic effects of the materials coming into contact with foods, and their overall and specific leaching characteristics have been investigated. Effects of materials coming into contact with foods, influencing organoleptic properties, were investigated using a standard triangle test [2]. Metal content of packaging materials was determined by ICPOES and ICP-MS techniques [3], [4]. In the „Materials and methods” section of this paper, methods are described for the identification and quantitative determination of compounds leaching from certain substances regularly coming into contact with foods. Organoleptic testing and analytical methods of metals leaching from packaging materials are not discussed. Leaching tests were performed using model solutions.

 

Materials coming into contact with foods were treated with deionized water, 3% acetic acid, 20, 50 or 96% ethanol model solutions. Total dissolved solids were determined by gravimetry. Individual components to be analyzed were butylhydroxytoluene (BHT), dibutyl phthalate, benzyl butyl phthalate, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, diisononyl phthalate, diisodecyl phthalate, irganox 1076 (octadecyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate), using dicyclohexyl phthalate surrogate standard and 2-fluorobiphenyl internal standard. To this end, a GC/ MS method without derivatization was developed, while for the determination of bisphenol-A (4,4’-(propane-2,2- diyl)-diphenol), a standard HPLC-FLD method without derivatization was adapted.
